A History of the French Labor Movement (1910-1928) provides an in-depth scholarly analysis of the evolution of organized labor in France during a critical period of social and political transformation. Marjorie Ruth Clark examines the development of the French working class from the height of revolutionary syndicalism through the profound changes wrought by the First World War and the subsequent decade of reconstruction.
The work explores the ideological conflicts and organizational shifts within major labor bodies, specifically the Confédération Générale du Travail (CGT). Clark investigates how the Russian Revolution, the split between socialist and communist factions, and the economic pressures of the post-war era redefined the goals and methods of French unions. Detailed attention is given to the movement's relationship with the state, the rise of collective bargaining, and the transition from militant direct action toward more institutionalized forms of labor representation.
This account serves as a vital resource for understanding the historical foundations of modern French industrial relations. It offers essential insights for historians, sociologists, and students of political science into the complexities of labor activism and the socio-economic forces that shaped early twentieth-century France.
