What makes Chongqing's story essential: At critical moments in Chinese history, Chongqing has stood at the crossroads. When Chiang Kai-shek's government fled the Japanese invasion in 1937, Chongqing became the nation's capital-enduring some of the most intensive strategic bombing of World War II. The city's resistance, symbolized by air raid sirens that still sound annually each June 5th, forged a collective identity of toughness and resilience that persists today.
In the Mao era, Chongqing anchored the Third Front-a massive, secretive program to relocate China's defense industries deep into the interior mountains. Factories and workers flooded in, transforming the region's economy and demographics. When Deng Xiaoping launched economic reforms, the city became a laboratory for market socialism. And in 1997, it received an unprecedented promotion to centrally administered municipality status, tasked with managing the Three Gorges Dam resettlement and driving development in China's vast western interior.
