What if the story behind the name Belarus is far more complicated than White Russia?

The name Belarus carries a history that reaches deep into the ancient Baltic world, the expansion of the Slavs, the rise of Kievan Rus, the growth of Lithuania and Moscow, and centuries of changing borders and political struggles.

History of Belarus follows the fascinating journey behind the name, tracing how the idea of White Rus appeared on historical maps, moved from the northern lands associated with Novgorod toward Moscow, and eventually became connected with the Ruthenian territories that would form the heart of modern Belarus.

Few people realize how dramatically the meaning of a historical name can change. What you are about to discover challenges the simple assumption that Rus automatically means Russia, or that White Rus was always another name for Belarus.

Inside these pages, you will encounter the ancient Baltic peoples who shaped the land before Belarus existed, the spread of Slavic language and culture, the rise of Kievan Rus, the importance of Polotsk and Novgorod, the emergence of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the growing power of Moscow, and the wars that reshaped the region.

You will also follow the clues left by historical maps and discover how names such as White Rus and Red Rus were used across different periods and territories. The result is a clearer understanding of how geography, politics, language, and historical memory can shape the identity of a country.

This book is for readers who want more than dates and names. It is for anyone curious about Eastern European history, the origins of Belarus, the legacy of Kievan Rus, or the historical relationship between Belarus, Lithuania, and Moscow.

Whether you are discovering Belarus for the first time or simply want to see its history from a different perspective, this journey offers a compelling way to understand the story behind its name.
