Drawing on three decades of statistical evidence and original empirical research, Economic Growth and Industrial Structure Evolution examines the dialectical relationship between aggregate economic growth and industrial structure transformation in China since the beginning of reform and opening-up. Liu Wei investigates how institutional reform and macroeconomic policy decisions have shaped China's industrial structure evolution, and how this evolution has in turn driven the country's sustained growth from a low-income economy to an upper middle-income country.

The study employs three complementary methodologies: international comparative analysis drawing on World Bank national income data; statistical research methods based on China's national economic accounting and employment data, including econometric modeling; and theoretical analysis applying classical economic theory to develop a framework for understanding economic growth and industrial structure transformation with Chinese characteristics. The volume draws on a substantial body of primary statistical sources, including longitudinal national accounts data and input-output tables, to construct a quantitative account of China's industrial transformation.

Organized into seven chapters, the volume examines: judgments concerning China's economic growth level and stage of development; new imbalances and policy responses under the new normal; aggregate disequilibria and macroeconomic regulation; the upgrading of industrial structure during economic growth; structural upgrading and growth efficiency; structural imbalances and distortions in primary income distribution; and the relationship between structural upgrading, economic adjustment, and supply-side reform. Liu argues that China's capacity to escape the middle-income trap depends fundamentally on resolving structural contradictions through institutional innovation and supply-side reform.

Originally selected for inclusion in the National Achievements Library of Philosophy and Social Sciences of China (2015)--one of China's most prestigious academic recognitions--this volume represents authoritative scholarship from one of China's leading economists. This Hindi-language edition makes the work accessible to Hindi-speaking scholars and students for the first time.

An essential acquisition for academic libraries supporting programs in economics, development economics, macroeconomics, industrial economics, China studies, public policy, comparative political economy, and South Asian Hindi-language collections.
