Heartburn (reflux disease) is usually caused by an excess of stomach acid. The function of stomach acid is to prepare food for actual digestion in the small and large intestines. It consists of hydrochloric acid, pepsin, gastrin, and a lot of other glandular secretions.

If the sphincter at the entrance to the stomach does not close properly, stomach acid can flow back into the esophagus. This results in burning, cramping, and piercing pain behind the breastbone extending upward into the throat as well as in the upper abdomen.
