Hazel is a rabbit who counts things. Four toes. Two ears. Eleven carrots. Counting makes the fizzy feeling in her tummy go quiet.
But there is one thing Hazel cannot count. She can't even look at it. Thunder is too big and too loud, and it comes from nowhere. So when the sky over the birch grove goes dark and purple and rumbly (FLASH ... KRA-BOOM), Hazel is under a root before the boom has finished, and the fox is under there with her, and his tail is wedged, and he is definitely not stuck.
Then Hazel squeezes her eyes shut and counts the only thing she can: one, two, three, four, five, six. The boom comes at six. Six is a number. And numbers are hers.
