Hart's Annual Army List Published annually between 1840 and 1915, Hart's Annual Army List was the indispensable unofficial register of officers serving in the British Army and, from 1862, the Indian Army. Compiled by Lieutenant-General Henry George Hart (1808-1878), the work transformed the recording of British military service by greatly expanding upon the information contained in the official Army Lists. When Hart entered the army, the principal reference was John Philippart's Royal Military Calendar (1820), but he recognised its limitations. Meticulously annotating interleaved copies of the official lists with officers' service details, he assembled a far more comprehensive record. With the encouragement of his wife and the approval of the military authorities, Hart published the first Quarterly Army List in February 1839, an immediate success. Granted privileged access to official service records, he followed this with the first Annual Army List in 1840, providing biographical details, campaign service, medals, and promotions that were unavailable elsewhere. After Hart's death, editorial responsibility passed to his son, FitzRoy Hart, ensuring the continuation of this invaluable reference work until its final edition in 1915. Today, Hart's Annual Army List remains one of the most important primary sources for historians, genealogists, and collectors researching the careers of British Army officers during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. This is volume one of the two-volume set.
