Originally entitled Ragnarok - A Tale of the Gods, by Danish author and philosopher Villy S rensen, this book depicts the creation of the world as the Norsemen imagined it. The author builds upon the traditional myths familiar from the Poetic and Prose Eddas, and gives them a fresh interpretation. Like most mythological works of the ancients, the tales raise fundamental questions about the nature of mankind, and set the seemingly impossible but necessary challenge of keeping the peace, whatever the cost.
By the time Ragnarok was published, S rensen had already made a name for himself as a serious writer of prose, the author of several collections of short stories dealing with the quirkier side of human nature, a number of serious philosophical works, as well as writings on S ren Kierkegaard (1961), Friedrich Nietzsche (1963), Franz Kafka (1968), Arthur Schopenhauer (1969) and Seneca (1976). He is the holder of numerous literary prizes, including the H. C. Andersen Award (1983).
