Mainz. In the year 1432.
All lives possess a second existence. It is born the day the first one ends. It is the one that does not grow old with the years, nor walks the paths once trodden by the person who gave rise to it: the one that dwells in the memory of the living. There remain those whom we can no longer embrace. It is the memory that lives in a word spoken during a supper; in a story repeated beside the fire; in a name inherited by a grandchild; in a gesture a mother passes to her daughter without knowing it once belonged to a grandmother who vanished years before.
Most human beings will never occupy a page in the books of History. They will not be remembered for their deeds. And yet, for a time, they will continue to exist. For the memory of a family is the humblest form of immortality. Parents survive in their children. Grandparents endure in their grandchildren. And future generations preserve fragments of lives that would otherwise be lost to time forever. No law guarantees this privilege. Those who are gone live as long as someone remembers who they were; as long as someone continues to speak their names. But even that modest form of eternity can fail. There are lives that never find a chronicler. There are stories that fade before they are told. There are families that disappear so swiftly that no one remains to preserve their memory. For death sometimes enters a house and leaves all its rooms empty. Sometimes it erases in a few weeks what took entire generations to build. Then no voices remain capable of remembering. And when the last witness disappears, an entire life is lost forever. Not the life of a king. Not that of a hero. The life of an ordinary person. The kind of life that makes up most of humanity: silent existences that sustain the world without expecting reward -women who raised their children without thanks; craftsmen who worked until exhaustion; labourers who sowed fields they never owned; fishermen whose names were lost forever to the sea. People to whom no one dedicated a statue. And who, even so, made the existence of future generations possible.
History speaks of emperors. Humanity speaks of people. And memory is a substance more fragile than parchment, more vulnerable than the quill. A fire can destroy a library. But a single illness can destroy an entire generation of memories. It is enough for those who were meant to pass them on to disappear. That is why human beings began to write. Not to be admired centuries later, but because they understood that human memory is not enough: it forgets, confuses, distorts, transforms facts, erases faces, preserves emotions while destroying details. And sooner or later it yields to the passage of time.
Written words were born as a defence against that defeat. It was an act of resistance, a small rebellion against oblivion. Every inscription carved in stone. Every letter. Every document. Every book... all were born of the same need: to preserve what would otherwise vanish. For centuries it was enough. But even books had limits. They were few, costly, slow to produce. As ephemeral as the hands charged with copying them. A manuscript could take years to complete. Knowledge survived, yes -but precariously, like a small flame shielded from the wind by the hands of those who guarded it. In the year 1432, Johannes Gutenberg still knew nothing of this. He did not know the role History would reserve for him. He did not imagine that one day millions of people would study his name. He did not suspect that his invention would transform the way humanity preserves knowledge. He was not even thinking of the printing press. He was simply a man, a craftsman, a husband, a father: an ordinary inhabitant of a city beside the Rhine. The kind of person chroniclers rarely consider important.
