Siempre hemos oÃdo la frase: Es un neandertal, como si nombrarlos fuera sinónimo de torpeza, brutalidad o falta de sensibilidad. Pero basta con mirar con un poco más de atención -a los huesos, a los hogares de piedra, a los restos de flores depositadas junto a un cuerpo- para comprender que esa frase nunca les perteneció. Que no habla de ellos, sino de nosotros.
Su cultura era sencilla solo en apariencia. Sabemos que cuidaban de sus enfermos, que enterraban a sus muertos sin señales de violencia, que colocaban objetos junto a ellos como si la despedida fuera un acto sagrado. Sabemos que conocÃan el fuego, que dominaban la piedra, que entendÃan el ritmo de las estaciones y el lenguaje de los animales. Y sobre todo, sabemos que no eran los seres brutales que la historia quiso imaginar. Eran, en muchos sentidos, más humanos que nosotros.
Pero un dÃa, algo cambió. Desde el sur comenzaron a llegar otros humanos. Más altos, más ágiles, con herramientas más finas y un modo de vida más expansivo: los Homo sapiens. No eran muchos al principio, pero su presencia se extendÃa como una sombra que avanzaba sin detenerse. Y los neandertales, que nunca buscaron el conflicto, hicieron lo que siempre habÃan hecho para sobrevivir: se apartaron. Se alejaron hacia zonas más frÃas, más duras, más inhóspitas. No por cobardÃa, sino por prudencia. Por proteger a los suyos.
La mezcla entre ambas especies existió, sÃ, pero fue desigual, residual, casi accidental. Hoy llevamos entre un uno y un dos por ciento de su ADN, una huella tenue que habla más de encuentros aislados que de una convivencia plena. No fue una fusión de mundos. Fue un roce, un cruce obligado por la cercanÃa, por la presión, por la fragilidad de quienes tenÃan menos fuerza demográfica para resistir. Porque en esta historia -en la historia de nuestro planeta- los neandertales son la parte frágil. La especie que retrocedió para evitar el choque. La que se desplazó hacia el frÃo buscando una seguridad que, sin saberlo, los empujó hacia un camino sin retorno. La mejor adaptación humana que jamás pisó nuestro planeta, se encontró con la mejor evolución humana que avanzaba sin mirar atrás.
Esta historia cuenta ese primer encuentro entre dos mundos que, aunque casi idénticos en la forma, diferÃan profundamente en el fondo. Es una historia con nombres, con familias, con dudas y esperanzas. Un relato cotidiano, pero situado hace 45.000 años. Y, si uno escucha con atención, no resulta tan extraño como podrÃa parecer. Porque la historia -antigua o moderna- siempre la escriben sus protagonistas. No un narrador, por hábil que sea. Y aquÃ, por fin, dejamos que hablen ellos.
