The Untold Story of Tompall Glaser, the Maverick Who Helped Shape Outlaw Country Music
Before Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and others in the Outlaw movement transformed country music, one man was already challenging Nashville's rules.
The Great Tompall: Forgotten Country Music Outlaw reveals the remarkable life of Tompall Glaser, a pioneering singer, songwriter, music studio owner, recording artist, entrepreneur, and champion of artistic freedom. With unprecedented access to Tompall himself and extensive interviews with family members, friends, fellow musicians, and industry insiders, author Kevin L. Glaser uncovers the story behind one of country music's most influential yet overlooked figures. It provides the account of a man whose contributions to country music have been overlooked despite their lasting impact.
Readers will journey from Tompall's childhood on a Nebraska farm to his emergence as one of the most compelling figures in country music. Along the way, they will gain rare insight into the evolution of Nashville's music industry from the 1950s through the 1990s - including the rise of the Outlaw movement, and the struggles artists faced while seeking creative control over their careers.
Inside you will discover:
- The evolving story of Tompall Glaser's career
- His pivotal role in the rise of the Outlaw Country movement
- Behind-the-scenes insights into Nashville's music industry
- Rare personal stories and historical documents
- The impact of his music studio, publishing business and other ventures on country music
Tompall often stood alone in his fight for artistic freedom for Nashville's musicians in the 1970s and he paid the price. While many of his peers, like Waylon and Willie, were heavily promoted, Tompall fell by the wayside and became the forgotten outlaw.
For fans of classic country music, music history, and the Outlaw era, this acclaimed biography provides a compelling portrait of a trailblazer whose influence continues to resonate today.
