In The Great Money Quest, young Trey and his mother turn an ordinary day at home into an adventure as they search for coins and dollars and discover all the different things money can help them do.
Created for younger readers, the story introduces financial literacy through exploration rather than instruction. As Trey discovers money throughout the house, he begins learning that money can be saved for something special, spent thoughtfully, shared with others, and used to create experiences and opportunities.
At the center of the story are a young Black boy and his mother, providing children with a positive representation of a Black family learning about and talking about money together. Trey is curious, energetic, and still learning, showing young readers that they do not need to understand money to start asking questions about it.
The story is especially useful for parents and educators working with children approximately ages 5-10 because its treasure-hunt approach can easily be extended into hands-on learning. Children can search for coins, identify denominations, count money, create savings jars, discuss ways to help others, or decide how to use the money they receive.
Teachers, librarians, financial counselors, homeschool families, and youth organizations can also use the book to connect financial literacy to counting, decision-making, generosity, goal-setting, and family conversations.
The Great Money Quest helps children understand an important lesson early: money is not only something we use to buy things. It can help us save, plan, give, create memories, reach goals, and make a positive difference in the lives of others.
