هذا كتاب عن سيرة إسماعيل باشا، الخديويّ الأوّل، حفيد محمّد علي، الذي عُرف بولعه بالبذخ، ولكن أيضًا بإنجازاته الكثيرة، وبالتحديث الذي شغله طوال فترة حكمه.
وُلِد إسماعيل باشا عام 1830، وحكم مصر منذ 1863 حتى 1879. وعلى عكس جدّه صاحب الأصول التركيّة-المقدونيّة، الذي استحوذ على السلطة بقوّة السلاح، قُدِّمت لإسماعيل مصر مزدهرة ذات موقع استراتيجي على طريق الهند. معه، بدأت رحلة التحديث في بلادٍ راحت تتشبّه بالقوى الأوروبّية الكبرى قناة السويس. مناهج مُستعارة من الغرب لتحديث قطاع التعليم. إصلاح النظام القضائي. تطوير في البنى التحتيّة وطرق المواصلات. كلّ ذلك، يضاف إليه أيضًا أموال طائلة صرفها إسماعيل باشا في سبيل الحصول على لقب الخديويّ من الباب العالي. في النهاية، وبعد تنازله مرغمًا عن العرش عام 1879، توارث ولاة مصر إنجازاته ولقبه، ولكن أيضًا بلادًا على حافّة الهاوية.
