Then a bank scam nearly empties Raj's pension in a single, humiliating afternoon. Months later, climbing a ladder to argue about that same leaking roof, his heart finally gives out - and a frantic ride in a neighbor's battered van becomes a race against time neither of them saw coming.
While Raj fights for his life in a Panaji hospital, Meera discovers what no app, algorithm, or well-meaning phone call from abroad can provide: a village that simply shows up. A rival who becomes an ally. A handyman who becomes family. A priest whose Sunday sermons somehow always know exactly what she needs to hear. A community held together by decades of gossip, rivalry, and - when it actually matters - arriving at each other's doors unasked.
As Raj slowly recovers, he and Meera face the question their children have been circling for months: stay in the crumbling, beloved home they've always known, or start over somewhere smaller, safer, and thousands of miles from everyone who knows their names. The answer, when it comes, surprises no one more than themselves.
Growing Together, Growing Older is a warm, funny, and ultimately deeply moving novel about what survives when everything else gets upgraded.
