When I tell people that I owned a restaurant for ten years, their eyes light up and that is usually followed by, Oh, I always wanted to own a restaurant. Really? Well, before you sign on the dotted line, call me, we'll talk. It's not all it's cracked up to be. It's not glamorous, it's not easy, it's not even satisfying owning your own business. The business owns you. There is no free time, no social life and no vacations. We never went anywhere or did anything. We worked to live and we lived to work. For ten years, I never used birth control! The restaurant was the best non-chemical form of birth control out there. Why? Because when you work with your spouse all day, every day, the last thing you want to do when you get home at night is.... well, you can figure it out. Oh, and one more thing...unless you keep two sets of books, the restaurant business is very rarely profitable in the first five years.
