Gouldtown: A Very Remarkable Settlement Of Ancient Date is a book written by William Steward and first published in 1913. The book provides a detailed history of Gouldtown, a small settlement in southern New Jersey that was founded by a group of free African Americans in the early 19th century.Steward's book traces the origins of the settlement back to the early 1700s, when a group of free black men and women first began to settle in the area. Over the years, the settlement grew and prospered, becoming a thriving community of farmers, craftsmen, and tradespeople. The book also explores the unique culture and traditions of Gouldtown, including its distinctive dialect, music, and cuisine. Steward provides detailed descriptions of the settlement's architecture, including its distinctive Gouldtown style of house construction.Throughout the book, Steward emphasizes the resilience and determination of the people of Gouldtown, who overcame numerous obstacles and challenges to build a successful and prosperous community. He also highlights the important role that Gouldtown played in the wider history of African American communities in the United States.Overall, Gouldtown: A Very Remarkable Settlement Of Ancient Date is a fascinating and informative account of a little-known chapter in American history, and a testament to the strength and perseverance of the human spirit. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
