Gouldtown: A Very Remarkable Settlement Of Ancient Date is a historical book written by William Steward and first published in 1913. The book provides a comprehensive account of the Gouldtown settlement, a small community of African Americans located in southern New Jersey that was established in the early 18th century. Steward's book is a detailed exploration of the history and culture of Gouldtown, tracing its origins back to the arrival of its first settlers in the 1700s. He describes the settlement's early struggles, including the challenges faced by its inhabitants as they attempted to establish themselves in a predominantly white society. Throughout the book, Steward provides vivid descriptions of the people, places, and events that shaped Gouldtown's history. He also highlights the community's many achievements, including its contributions to the abolitionist movement and its role in the Underground Railroad. Overall, Gouldtown: A Very Remarkable Settlement Of Ancient Date is a fascinating and informative account of a little-known chapter of American history. It offers readers a glimpse into the lives and experiences of a group of people who overcame tremendous obstacles to build a thriving community in the face of adversity. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
