The row of well-kept grinders in the Squire's head, quite forgetful of their aristocratic belonging, chattered as if they had been the property only of some frozen-out gardener; the nose was frosted at the tip as if it had not been high and arched, and in fact could have behaved no worse if it had been born a very pug; his Norman blood that had come over with the Conqueror froze as if it had been of a republican red instead of an ancient blue; down the Squire's back poured cold springs just as if he had been nothing better than a London omnibus driver, and up and down him crept shivers that began at his toes and worked their way up until they shivered themselves out in the shivering words, '...
