The Reformed tradition gave you something
most western Christianity didn't: a serious theology. The Westminster
Confession, the Heidelberg Catechism, the carefully reasoned system of doctrine
built over centuries. You didn't leave because you weren't paying attention.
You left because you were.
The God Behind the Confession is for those
who followed the logic of Reformed theology faithfully - all the way to the
conclusions the framework produced - and found themselves unable to go further.
The election anxiety. The double predestination wound. The confessional
authority that organized everything. The community that enforced its standards.
The doctrine of depravity that undercut the very faculties needed to question
it.
But the confession was built on the texts.
What were the texts saying before the confession organized them? That's the
question this booklet is asking. Not to tear down what was built - but to look
at what it was built on, because what it was built on is prior to the building,
and when the building fails, the prior reality doesn't fail with it.
