The Gloaming is a dystopian techno-thriller occurring in a post-pandemic world where a mutated form of the COVID virus has irreversibly altered humankind. As a result, one-third of the global population has developed brain swelling and erratic, sometimes violent, behavior, setting the stage for societal collapse. Michael Thompson, reeling from the aftereffects of COVID, escapes to the Pacific Crest Trail where he encounters Strider and then Telomere who joins him on a thru-hike journey that takes a dark turn as nightmares return from childhood to torment them. Dogged by fatigue and injury, Michael and Telomere face steep slopes and swift-moving snowmelt as well as ominous premonitions of an entity following them and infiltrating their dreams as they track Strider through the Sierra Nevada. Meanwhile, Michael's daughter and colleagues untangle a knot of genetic sabotage, undocumented gamma activity, and bio-exploitation on a massive scale. As they draw closer to the truth, government agents mobilize to stop them, but when Micheal, Strider, and Telomere converge on Yosemite as the sisters meet in the valley below, a new form of energy is unleashed, forever changing human history.
