Some of these stories are based on ideas I've carried around for decades, while others have arrived more recently. I didn't go looking for these stories. They more or less came to me, through the back door, ideas that popped into my head, then hung around long enough that they were almost fully written before I attempted to put them down on paper.
Only after assembling them did I recognize what appeared to be the common thread. They were all about voices-words shouted in anger, conversations I eavesdropped on, or conversations that took place entirely in my head when I might have been better off sleeping. An old women's one-sided-conversation with her dog does not seem too far-fetched, while an old man's conversation with a wolf would be absurd had it not occurred in a fable. The conversations between the ghosts only occur because something else did not occur, while Crazy Joe's conversations seemed real, but who knows. Some are conversations that needs to occur.
