The Girls No One Saw is a book about girls and women who spent years being seen as shy, overly sensitive, difficult, anxious, perfectionistic, distracted, intense, or simply different, when in reality, there was a much bigger story behind it all.
For decades, autism was studied, described, and recognized primarily through characteristics more commonly observed in boys. As a result, countless girls grew up with their signs going unnoticed. They learned to observe, imitate, rehearse responses, hide their discomfort, endure sensory and emotional overload, and develop ways to appear socially appropriate. Many learned to adapt on the outside while, on the inside, accumulating exhaustion, anxiety, a persistent sense of not fitting in, and a question that followed them throughout much of their lives: Why does everything seem so much harder for me?
This book brings those girls into view.
Throughout these pages, Dr. Estéfani Ortiz explores female autism in an accessible, compassionate, and scientifically grounded way, revealing how its presentation can differ from the characteristics traditionally associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
