There she meets Adrián del Monte, a young reader who, many years later, will become a physician, businessman, congressman, and the author of a bold proposal for the political integration of Latin America.
Marina Montalvo grows up surrounded by books, languages, physical discipline, and an extraordinary ability to read silences, gestures, and hidden structures. A mistake made during an international competition in London places her under the watchful eye of MI6. Adrián, meanwhile, draws the attention of foreign intelligence services after presenting a constitutional reform intended to encourage the creation of a Latin American Community of Nations.
Their paths cross again when both are used as links by European intelligence agencies. What begins as an investigation into foundations, banks, shipping companies, consulting firms, and technology corporations gradually reveals a far greater structure: a Eurasian conglomerate determined to prevent Latin America from becoming an autonomous political and economic bloc.
At the center of that network stands Reika Kuroda, a Japanese businesswoman, art collector, and relentless strategist whose doctrine is as elegant as it is dangerous: regional integration may be allowed only if it is born under control.
The conspiracy reaches its climax in Acapulco during an international summit where a historic treaty is to be signed with the support of the president of the United States. The secret operation aims to assassinate him, alter the course of the American presidential election, and destroy any possibility of continental integration for decades.
But the true battle will not be fought only against Reika.
Adrián and Marina discover that their own agencies have also used them as pieces, exploiting their shared past, their family ties, and their most intimate loyalties. They must then decide whom to obey: their services, their countries, their loved ones, or a historical idea that may be worth more than their own lives.
