Am 23. Januar 1978 betrat David Wallin sein unbeleuchtetes Zuhause. Von seiner schwangeren Frau Teresa (22) fehlte jede Spur. Das Radio lief noch und auf dem Teppich bemerkte er seltsame Flecken. Wallin folgte ihnen ins Schlafzimmer, wo ihn ein Anblick erwartete, der ihn für den Rest seines Lebens verfolgen sollte. Teresa war sexuell missbraucht und verstümmelt worden, und ihr fehlten mehrere Körperteile sowie gro e Mengen Blut.
Vier Tage später wurde die Polizei von Sacramento zu einem Haus gerufen, das etwa anderthalb Kilometer vom Wohnort der Wallins entfernt lag. Auf das, was sie dort erwartete, waren die Beamten nicht vorbereitet. Daniel Meredith (56) und Jason Miroth (6) waren durch mehrere Schüsse getötet und Evelyn Miroth (38) war wie Teresa entstellt, ausgeweidet und misshandelt worden. Auch ihr fehlten mehrere Körperteile und sehr viel Blut. David Ferreira (2), der in Evelyns Obhut gewesen war, war verschwunden und befand sich vermutlich in den Händen des geistesgestörten Massenmörders.
Die Sachlage war eindeutig: In Sacramento trieb ein blutrünstiger Serienmörder sein Unwesen. FBI und örtliche Polizei waren überzeugt, dass er erneut zuschlagen würde und seine Verbrechen weiter eskalieren könnten, wenn sie ihn nicht umgehend fassten.
