Von weiten Teilen der Forschung werden die Thermen Roms noch immer im Kontext des Topos von Brot und Spielen als eine Art antiker Wellness-Center gesehen. Von dieser Lesart Abstand nehmend, bringt die vorliegende Studie erstmals die romische Thermenkultur mit dem Konzept der Sorge um sich selbst in Zusammenhang. Demnach waren Thermen keineswegs Statten des Mussiggangs, sondern dienten der Kultivierung einer bestimmten Lebensform, die von der Aufforderung zur Sorge um den eigenen Korper und Geist gepragt war. Dieser Sorge konnte der Besucher in den Thermen nachgehen, sei es die Korpersorge durch Sport im Bereich der palaestra, Massagen und Salbungen in den unctoria, den Gang zur Latrine und freilich das Baden, sei es die Geistessorge beim Besuch der Garten oder Bibliotheken. Das zugleich individuelle und kollektive Einuben der Sorge um sich selbst wahrend des Thermenbesuchs wirkte gesamtgesellschaftlich verbindend, einigend und stabilisierend; als Architekturen der Lebenskunst stellten die Thermen demnach eine sozio-politische Notwendigkeit im Rahmen des Prinzipats dar.
