Platons Gefangene stammt von einem Geschwisterpaar, einer Expertin für Neurowissenschaften und einem Experten für Physik. Das Buch stellt das Konzept des Daumenkino-Idealismus vor: ein Gegengift zum Materialismus, welches jedoch von der Wissenschaft inspiriert ist. Die Idee wird anhand eines imaginären Gerichtsverfahrens präsentiert, in dem Paul angeklagt wird, in einem klassischen Trolley-Problem-Szenario irrational gehandelt zu haben, indem er fünf KI-Roboter tötete, um einen Menschen zu retten, dessen Bewusstsein als illusorisch angesehen wird. Auf weniger als 100 Seiten bietet das Buch eine Fülle von zum Nachdenken anregenden Ideen auf unterhaltsame Weise.
Die zentrale These von Platons Gefangene lautet, dass unsere subjektive bewusste Erfahrung Teil eines primären Bewusstseins ist und auf einem aufeinanderfolgenden Erleben von Momentaufnahmen in diskreten Zeit-Frames fu t.
