Bess Brenck Kalischer, die wenig beachtete, aber dennoch literarisch bedeutsame deutsche Dichterin, veröffentlichte seit 1913 Gedichte und Prosatexte in expressionistischen Zeitschriften. Der Roman Die Mühle entstand 1922 in Berlin und ist aufgrund seiner symbolhaft verschlüsselten Sprache stark von der Lyrik der Avantgarde geprägt. In ihrem Roman lässt die Autorin Gedankenspiele wie Prosagedichte aufeinander folgen und verwebt sie mit phantasiereichen Einfällen und Anspielungen auf Zeitgenossen, wie z.B. den Verleger Kurt Wolff oder den Schriftsteller Salomo Friedländer.
