Martin Kippenberger (1953-97) ist längst als bedeutender Künstler des 20. Jahrhunderts anerkannt. Eine umfassende, kunsthistorisch fundierte Auseinandersetzung mit Kippenberger fehlte bislang jedoch. Hier setzt die vorliegende Publikation an. Erstmals konnte gezeigt werden, dass dem OEuvre ein übergreifendes Thema zugrunde liegt, dessen fundamentale Bedeutung für eine Vielzahl von Diskursen sich erst retrospektiv erschlie t: der Konstruktcharakter von Identitäten. Kippenberger erkannte diesen nicht nur früh, sondern verband die ironische Wendung der Diskurse mit einer pointierten Persiflage auf die Kunst der Moderne und Postmoderne. Aus einer kritisch-distanzierten Warte, die stets die eigene Position als Künstler und Europäer mit reflektierte, karikierte er jene künstlerischen Positionen, die unreflektiert mit Identitätsklischees umgingen.
