Currently, synthetic biology is attempting to re-design entire species, working on the resurrection of long-extinct species to protect collapsing ecosystems, and using CRISPR to intervene specifically in the human germ line.
For his critique of this Promethean biology, Martin Müller combines approaches from media and cultural studies with design theory and the history of knowledge. His Genealogie der Zoëpolitik is a quasi-new theory of power and life. It describes a 'will to generate life' that emerged around 1800. This intensified and escalated during the 'molecular revolution' of the 20th century, and continues to do so today in the emergence of synthetic biology, which conceives of all planetary nature and biological life as a field of intervention for calculated engineering.
