Die Nordseeinsel Langeoog als Brennpunkt deutscher Geschichte: Jörg Echternkamp historisiert erstmals umfassend einen Naturraum am Rande Deutschlands, der sich seit den 1880er Jahren zu einem Drehkreuz historischen Wandels entwickelt hat. Die methodisch reflektierte Untersuchung greift Impulse der modernen Raumgeschichte auf und fragt nach den wechselnden Bedeutungen, die Langeoog von den Einheimischen wie den Fremden zugeschrieben wurden. Um deutsche Geschichte zu dezentralisieren, verschränkt Echternkamp analytisch und narrativ die Geschichte der Insel und ihrer Menschen mit der Geschichte Nordwestdeutschlands wie auch der National- und Globalgeschichte. So verdeutlicht er die Dynamik der Verflechtung: durch politische, religiöse und kulturelle Einflüsse, durch administrative, wirtschaftliche und militärische Verbindungen und nicht zuletzt durch Zu- und Abwanderung sowie freiwillige oder erzwungene Aufenthalte auf Zeit. Diese erste histoire totale einer deutschen Insel liefert aufschlussreiche Beiträge zur Tourismus- und Umweltgeschichte, zur NS- und Antisemitismusforschung, zur Militär-, Sozial- und Kulturgeschichte. Nicht zuletzt erweitert sie den touristischen Blick um die Einsicht in die Historizität eines Naturparadieses.
Band 3 der mikrogeschichtlichen Langzeitstudie zeigt eindringlich die zerstörerische Dynamik der Gewalt während des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Es geht jedoch nicht allein um die Auswirkungen des Kriegsgeschehens und der Militärpräsenz auf das Leben der Insulaner. Jörg Echternkamp schildert die Insel darüber hinaus als einen Gewaltraum, der durch die Zwangsarbeit von Kriegsgefangenen und Zivilisten sowie das Massensterben sowjetischer Soldaten geprägt war. Seine Erzählung wird mit Darstellungen des nationalsozialsozialistischen Terrors, der antisemitischen Verfolgung und der deutschbaltischen Geschichte im Zuge der Germanisierungspolitik geschickt verflochten, die für Langeoog weitreichende Folgen hatten.
