Als Joseph Haydn am 31. Mai 1809 im Alter von 77 Jahren starb, war er der berühmteste Komponist seiner Zeit, doch bald verbla te der Ruhm und seine Musik wurde nur noch als Vorläufer der Werke von Mozart und Beethoven wahrgenommen. Heute dagegen gilt er als moderner Kompositionswissenschaftler, der ein kluger Stratege auf dem Kunstmarkt war und neue Hörgewohnheiten in die Welt der Musik brachte. Den grö ten Teil seines Werks schuf Haydn von 1760 bis 1790 als Vize- und Hofkapellmeister des Hauses Esterházy. Erst nach dem Tod des Fürsten wurde ihm bewu t, da er in Paris, Berlin, Petersburg und London schon lange zum Star am Himmel der Instrumentalmusik aufgestiegen war. Hans Dieter Schäfer widmet sich in diesem Band seinen letzten Jahren von 1803 bis 1809, in denen er aus Krankheitsgründen nicht mehr komponieren konnte.
