Iwein ist eine bedeutende Verserzählung des mittelhochdeutschen Dichters Hartmann von Aue, entstanden um 1200. Das Werk ist eine Bearbeitung des altfranzösischen Romans Yvain ou Le Chevalier au Lion von Chrétien de Troyes und gehört zu den wichtigsten Werken der mittelhochdeutschen Artusepik.
Die Geschichte handelt von dem Ritter Iwein, der auf der Suche nach Abenteuern und Ehre seinen Platz am Hof König Artus' verlässt. Er besiegt den Ritter Ascalon, heiratet dessen Witwe Laudine und vernachlässigt schlie lich seine Pflichten als Ehemann und Ritter. Durch den Verlust seiner Ehre und die Trennung von Laudine muss Iwein sich erneut bewähren und zahlreiche Abenteuer bestehen, um seine frühere Position und das Vertrauen seiner Frau zurückzugewinnen. Dabei wird er von einem Löwen begleitet, den er vor einem Drachen rettet und der ihm fortan treu zur Seite steht.
Hartmanns Iwein zeichnet sich durch seine kunstvolle Sprache, die psychologische Tiefe der Charaktere und die Auseinandersetzung mit zentralen Themen wie Ehre, Liebe und Schuld aus. Das Werk bietet einen faszinierenden Einblick in die mittelalterliche Welt und die Ideale des Rittertums.
