Lessings Übersetzungswerk - ca. 7.000 Druckseiten - umfasst mehr als vierzig Titel, fast ebenso viele Autoren und diverse Gattungen. Lessing übersetzt aus dem Lateinischen, Italienischen, Französischen, Englischen und Spanischen.
Unter seiner Federführung wird die Übersetzungsfrage in der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts erstmals Gegenstand der deutschen Literaturkritik; Lessing ist Leitfigur einer Epoche, in der die deutsche Literatur zu den europäischen Nachbarliteraturen aufschlie t. Seine Bedeutung als Übersetzer ist gleichwohl bisher nur selten untersucht worden, ein Grund mag die noch immer beklagenswerte Editionslage sein.
Der vorliegende Band ergänzt die Beiträge einer Wolfenbütteler Tagung aus dem Herbst 2007 um zwei weitere Aufsätze. Thematisch und methodisch ganz unterschiedliche Aspekte kommen dabei zur Sprache - von Lessings Übersetzungen einzelner Autoren wie Diderot, Huarte, Hutcheson, Riccoboni und St. Albine, Thomson und Voltaire, über die Frage seiner Goldoni-Adaption, bis zu allgemeinen Fragestellungen nach Lessing als Philologen, der Theorie und Praxis seiner Übersetzungen vor dem Hintergrund der Beschäftigung mit Johann Nicolaus Meinhard, seinem Anteil an der Entwicklung des deutschen Wortschatzes mit Blick auf die Übersetzungen.
