Networks of contracts are ubiquitous in everyday business life. Of these, this dissertation singles out Franchise-Arrangements, consisting of numerous units which equal each other in external appearance but are, however, not branches but legally independent firms. The network is the basis for their success - and simultaneously the source of specific difficulties which are analysed under German as well as English Law. One example is the problem of free-riding which is of enormous practical relevance.
