Die Bergpredigt gilt als das Herzstück der Lehre Jesu. Fausto Sozzini (1539-1604), einer der bedeutendsten Theologen der Reformationszeit, legte sie mit einer für sein Jahrhundert ungewöhnlichen philologischen Strenge und intellektuellen Konsequenz aus - Vers für Vers, Kapitel für Kapitel.
Was Sozzinis Auslegung besonders macht
Sozzini liest die Bergpredigt nicht als frommen Appell, sondern als zusammenhängende Rede Christi, deren innere Logik es freizulegen gilt. Er beginnt beim griechischen Wortlaut: Was bedeutet makarios - selig - wirklich? Was ist mit der Armut im Geiste gemeint? Wie verhalten sich die Seligpreisungen bei Matthäus zu jenen bei Lukas? Er vergleicht griechische, syrische und lateinische Handschriften, identifiziert spätere Textergänzungen und unterscheidet prophetisches Reden von blo er Weisheitsrede. Was entsteht, ist kein dogmatisches Traktat, sondern ein denkendes Ringen mit dem Text.
Ein Werk, das unvollendet blieb
Sozzini hat seinen Kommentar nicht zu Ende führen können: Der vorliegende Text endet mitten in Kapitel 6 des Matthäusevangeliums. Kapitel 7 - die Abschnitte über das Richten, das Gebet und den schmalen Weg - blieb unkommentiert. Was wir besitzen, ist also ein Fragment, aber ein au erordentlich reiches: Hunderte von Seiten minutiöser Auslegung, die zeigen, wie ein Denker des 16. Jahrhunderts die Schrift mit philologischer Präzision und theologischer Unerschrockenheit befragte. Gerade das Unvollendete macht dieses Werk zu einem ehrlichen Zeugnis - der Text bricht ab, wie so vieles in Sozzinis Leben unter Druck und Verbannung entstehen musste.
