Now there are new faces in town. A man called Carl Brandt asks the county office about the old mill. A second man, Viktor Dragunov, walks the streets at different hours, timing the route from the school to Sycamore Street and noting the blind spot forty feet long. A young woman named Olena Kovalenko watches from the edges and waits, with the particular patience of someone who believes she is doing the only right thing left in the world to do.
And Caleb Donovan goes to school. He takes his chemistry quiz. He eats lunch with his best friend Buggs and walks Barbara partway home. He carries the only copy of his invention left in the world inside his head, down the same hallways he's walked for years, and laughs for all of them because stopping would be a flag.
His father, Jonathon Donovan - a quiet man, a careful man, a lawyer who has spent nine years in the corner of the room watching - stands at the front window at night and watches the street.
