General Von Steuben is a biography written by John McAuley Palmer that chronicles the life and military career of Friedrich Wilhelm August Heinrich Ferdinand Steuben, a Prussian officer who played a crucial role in the American Revolutionary War. The book begins with Steuben's early life in Europe, his military training in Prussia, and his experiences as a staff officer for Frederick the Great. It then follows Steuben as he travels to America to offer his services to the Continental Army, where he became a key figure in training and organizing the troops. The book provides a detailed account of Steuben's contributions to the American Revolution, including his development of the blue book drill manual and his role in the Battle of Monmouth. It also explores his relationships with other notable figures of the time, such as George Washington and Benjamin Franklin.Throughout the book, Palmer presents a balanced view of Steuben, highlighting both his strengths and weaknesses. He also provides insight into the political and social climate of the time, as well as the challenges faced by the Continental Army.Overall, General Von Steuben is a comprehensive and engaging biography that sheds light on one of the lesser-known heroes of the American Revolution. It is a must-read for anyone interested in military history, the American Revolution, or the life of General Von Steuben himself. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
