Paralyzed by the terrifying execution of the Romanovs in Yekaterinburg and fearful of a Bolshevik revolution, King Victor Emmanuel III and his court aristocrats-represented by the fictional Count Giulio Maria della Gherardesca-use the blacksmith's son from Predappio as their media shield. They fund his rise, grant him institutional immunity, and hand him the keys to the State to protect their vast estates, private wealth, and the throne.
The sweeping narrative counterpoints the cynical, behind-the-scenes dealings of royal emissaries and high-level politicians with the raw, tragic reality of ordinary working-class Italians, embodied by the Fabbri family. From the mud of the reclaimed Pontine Marshes to the frozen hell of the Russian Front, ordinary citizens pay the ultimate price for dynastic greed, state propaganda, and geopolitical posturing.
The story reaches its climax on April 28, 1945, in the low-ceilinged bedroom of the De Maria farmhouse in Giulino di Mezzegra.
