Kierkegaards Denken steht ohne Frage in Kontinuität zur Epoche der klassischen deutschen Philosophie. Dass es aber nicht nur Fichte, Schelling und Hegel waren, die für Kierkegaard eine Rolle gespielt haben, sondern er sich vielmehr explizit in die gedankliche Nachfolge Jacobis stellt, ist bisher nahezu unbemerkt geblieben.
Insbesondere in den 'Philosophischen Brocken' und in deren 'Abschlie ender unwissenschaftlicher Nachschrift' bilden die Referenzen auf Jacobi systematisch entscheidende Gelenkstellen in der Entwicklung und argumentativen Entfaltung der dort präsentierten Position einer existenziellen Ethik. In der 'Nachschrift' installiert Kierkegaard eine ausführliche Diskussion von Jacobis Figur eines Salto mortale, von der her er sowohl seine Handlungs- als auch seine Kommunikationstheorie einer 'indirekten Mitteilung' entwirft. Diese so spezifizierte Ethik der 'Nachschrift' ist vor allem aber bereits in den 'Brocken' mithilfe von Jacobis Argument eines wesentlichen Unterschieds der Begriffe von Grund und Ursache modalontologisch fundiert worden.
Erst vor dem Hintergrund dieser Auseinandersetzung mit Jacobi ist Kierkegaards schriftstellerische Tätigkeit als der einheitliche Versuch zu verstehen, die Freiheit und Verantwortung des Einzelnen gegen eine verabsolutierte Rationalität in Stellung zu bringen.
