To win an interstellar war against a forgotten enemy, the former League of Human Worlds purged all high technology along with the digitized history and knowledge of hundreds of worlds. This victory came at a heavy cost, bringing an end to interstellar travel and disaster to those worlds dependent on interplanetary trade. This catastrophic event came to be known as the Collapse.

Rebuilding from a horrifying Dark Age lasting nearly two millennia, humankind has once again begun to reach out to the stars with the aid of the enigmatic Pincherians. An alien species from another part of the galaxy, they made interstellar travel possible once again and have helped to build a strong trade network with their human partners as one by one, the lost worlds of the League were rediscovered.

Few worlds are ideally suited for human life. Only the Elite of humanity are permitted to live upon them. The rest of mankind lives under far harsher conditions. Other colonies exist on barely-habitable planets and moons where everyday life is a constant struggle.

There is an escape from these less-than-friendly places: The Pincherian Academy.

Acceptance into the Academy comes with an obligatory twenty-year term of service. That service is rewarded with the finest education available and a place alongside the Pincherians as they search for other lost worlds through their Probe program. Work long enough, survive long enough, and elevation to the Elite is a practical certainty.
