Fumo Liongo was a warrior from the city of Pate on the East African coast who lived between the 9th and 13th centuries.
Fumo Liongo's fame stemmed from his bravery, patriotism and his talent for eloquence among the people of Pate and the surrounding areas. For King Mringwari, Liongo's bravery and fame are a major threat to his rule. The height of fear and hatred against Fumo Liongo is reached when Liongo leads an army into battle and defeats the Gala, their traditional enemies. Despite defending and protecting Pate from invaders, Liongo receives no praise but only the gratitude of donkeys as King Daudi Mringwari intends to take his life. He says, I have tamed this mighty dragon in the den of my kingdom ... but now I will burn it with fire,
I will turn it into cold ashes instead of burying its body.
