Leighton that explores the influence of French philosophers on the Transcendentalist movement in New England during the 19th century. The book delves into the works of French philosophers such as Victor Cousin, Maine de Biran, and Auguste Comte and their impact on the ideas and beliefs of Transcendentalist thinkers like Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Margaret Fuller. Leighton examines the similarities and differences between French and American philosophical traditions and how they intersected during this period. The book also discusses the role of French language and literature in shaping the intellectual climate of New England and the impact of French immigrants on American culture.
