Beginning with the operative stonemasons of medieval Europe and the rise of speculative Freemasonry in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, this volume places St. John's Lodge No. 2 within the wider history of the Craft across Britain, Ireland, and the Atlantic world.
Constituted in Halifax in 1780, St. John's Lodge No. 2 emerged during a formative period in Nova Scotia's colonial history. Through archival records, early lodge minutes, historical maps, biographies, and Masonic documents, this book explores the lives of the men who helped shape both the Lodge and the city around it.
This first volume follows the Lodge from 1780 to 1880, examining its constitutional beginnings, its English registry history, the influence of military and colonial Freemasonry, and the development of organized Masonry in Nova Scotia. It also highlights figures connected to Halifax Masonry, including Erasmus James Philipps, Richard John Uniacke, Alexander Keith, and others whose contributions left a lasting mark on the province.
More than a chronological history, Freemasonry in Halifax reflects on the ideals that have long defined the Craft: fellowship, charity, education, moral discipline, and service to community. Written with historical care and narrative warmth, this richly illustrated volume preserves the early story of St. John's Lodge No. 2 for Masons, their families, historians, and the wider public.
