Née en 1903 dans une famille d'agriculteurs modestes du Haut-Saint-Laurent, Élisabeth refuse très tôt le destin tracé pour elle. De ses études en hygiène publique à l'Université de Montréal jusqu'à son engagement comme infirmière militaire pendant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, son parcours témoigne d'un courage et d'une détermination remarquables. Déployée en Angleterre, puis sur le front méditerranéen, elle survit au torpillage d'un navire transportant près de 2 000 militaires - un épisode qui illustre la violence et l'incertitude d'une époque bouleversée.
De retour au pays, elle consacre sa carrière à la Ville de Montréal, au service d'hygiène publique, division des maladies vénériennes. Elle assiste alors à une modernisation rapide progrès en santé publique, nouvelles technologies, essor de la télévision et transformation des infrastructures, dont le métro. Dans l'élan de la Révolution tranquille, elle voit Montréal se réinventer et s'affirmer sur la scène internationale, un mouvement que symbolise Expo 67.
À travers ce récit, l'auteure nous invite à découvrir non seulement l'histoire d'une femme exceptionnelle, mais aussi les coulisses de sa propre enquête: un journal de recherche, des choix éditoriaux assumés, une part de fiction réfléchie et une plongée passionnante dans le monde des archives.
Ce livre est à la fois une fresque historique, un hommage familial et une réflexion sur la mémoire collective.
