This is a story about monsters, monsters who become heroes, and prickly allegiances surrounding a teenage witch, Charisma Black, and her two best friends. Even in this magical world, with magical beings folklore only got partially right, and magical beings you've never heard of, Charisma and her friends are considered outcasts. She comes from a notoriously pernicious family while her fellow best friends are a half demon and an orphan of oracles who deigns to hang-out with them.
By family blood, Charisma is part of the underworld coven trying to overthrow the overworld's emperor of magic. She's been selected to be the future queen and is forced to date the current leader's son. Power, skill, and bloodlines she's got, but she thinks there's more to being chosen, because it feels like a trap she's always been in, when surely someone older would do just as well.
Charisma's life is full of contradictions. Within her very old and very rich family, her homelife is grand and torturous. Her family is large, but they don't feel like family. Only her twin and two best friends are her family. She's incredibly powerful but feels powerless. To outsiders she seems cold, but she'd die for her friends. She doesn't feel safe in the underworld, but the overworld is afraid of her.
Charisma's twin, Byron, was cursed, and no one has been able to cure him. All Charisma wants is to save her brother from a curse no one has been able to break and run away from her family name and the position the coven has chosen for her.
While untangling old magic to free Byron, help also comes from odd places like Charisma's hawk friends, a ghost of a vampire, and an old comic book.
