Taluen, Guyane, en pays amérindien. Mayuwale et Alawa, deux frères wayana, ont quitté leur village à l'adolescence pour entrer au collège. Autrefois très proches, désormais tout les oppose. L'aîné vit à Cayenne, entre ennui et chômage, et fuit ses origines. Son frère, revenu auprès des siens, se renferme avec aigreur sur lui-même tout en revendiquant vainement son identité wayana. Leurs retrouvailles à Taluen pour une cérémonie traditionnelle vont pourtant brutalement sceller leurs destins et marquer le début d'un périlleux périple, remontant vers la source du fleuve Maroni et de l'histoire de leur peuple.
