Le Pape Pie IX fut l'un des plus marquants du XIXe siècle. Béatifié en 2000 par Jean-Paul II, son pontificat fut l'un des plus longs de l'Histoire: 31 ans, 7 mois et 23 jours. Cet ouvrage présente une synthèse des événements importants de sa vie, en mettant l'accent sur ses actions et ses souffrances. Le lecteur y retrouvera par exemple les nombreuses réformes qu'il entreprit pour moderniser les États pontificaux. Il y est aussi question du Syllabus des erreurs - un document qui condamne les propositions qu'on ne saurait soutenir sans être hérétique - et du premier concile du Vatican durant lequel fut proclamé le dogme de l'infaillibilité pontificale.
Le texte est suivi d'un appendice dans lequel sont expliqués dans le détail les funérailles papales, l'élection des papes et le conclave. On y retrouve aussi une présentation de sa sainteté Léon XIII, le successeur de Pie IX, ainsi qu'une chronologie des souverains pontifes depuis Saint Pierre.
