Le Turc de la rue Saint-Denis; ou, La fausse veuve is a one-act comedy in prose by A. Martainville, originally published in 1804. This play offers a glimpse into the theatrical tastes and social dynamics of post-Revolutionary France. The play's lighthearted approach belies the significant historical context in which it was written and performed. The theme of mistaken identity, exemplified by La fausse veuve (the false widow), drives the plot and provides ample opportunity for humor and social commentary.
Martainville's work provides valuable insight into the popular entertainment of the era. This edition allows modern readers to rediscover this engaging piece of French theatrical history.
