Abordant son sujet par petites touches aphoristiques, ce livre ne renferme pas toute la morale de Maïmonide et ce ne sont que des propos glanés, écrit modestement celui-ci. Néanmoins, ce volume, extrait d'un commentaire biblique beaucoup plus vaste, reflète bien les préoccupations du plus grand penseur du judaïsme médiéval (1135-1204). En fait, sous couvert de compilation d'enseignements antérieurs, il confère à la pratique religieuse juive une dimension spirituelle toute nouvelle en l'établissant sur un fondement philosophique: l'éthique du grec Aristote et celle du musulman al-Farabi (872-950), qu'il reconnaissait comme son maître. On retrouve aussi dans ces pages le médecin mettant fréquemment en rapport le physique et le moral, s'intéressant dans plusieurs de ces huit chapitres aux maladies de l'âme. L'homme parfait examine continuellement ses traits de caractère, soupèse ses actions et considère la disposition de son âme chaque jour. Chaque fois qu'il voit son âme pencher vers un des bords, il se hâte de la soigner et ne laisse pas la disposition de l'action mauvaise s'installer par la répétition de l'action mauvaise. Outre la traduction et les notes, le professeur Rémi Brague nous fournit le texte original du livre en arabe, transcrit en lettres hébraïques.
