Tradition and Marriage among the Pévé (Chad - Cameroon) offers a unique insight into the matrimonial customs of the Pévé people in the pre-colonial era. Through a rigorous analytical-descriptive approach, this essay explores the various aspects of Pévé marriage, from the choice of spouse to wedding rituals, including betrothal and dowry. The author draws on Claude Lévi-Strauss's structural theory to offer an in-depth analysis of Pévé family structures. The book precisely describes the varied family configurations-whether monogamous or polygamous, nuclear or extended-and the rules that govern the community in the face of events such as widowhood, adultery, or divorce.
More than an anthropological work, this book reveals the cultural richness of the Pévé people and their traditions surrounding marriage and family. It offers a synchronic look at ancestral practices, such as funeral rituals and sacred prohibitions, while shedding light on the subtleties of a little-known society.
This book, combining scientific depth and clarity of exposition, is aimed at both specialists and anyone wishing to discover the fascinating customs of a little-studied African community.
